Apple is introducing major audio enhancements to its automotive platform, Apple CarPlay, with the upcoming iOS 27 update. The software refresh focuses on improving user convenience and driving safety by adding a redesigned MiniPlayer and introducing audio scrubbing functionality.
iOS 27’s CarPlay miniplayer
According to 9to5Mac, the most notable visual update is the replacement of the legacy waveform icon in the top-right corner with a full-featured MiniPlayer. This new interface displays current album art and provides basic playback controls directly within the primary navigation screen. Drivers can pause or skip tracks without switching away from their active maps, resolving a long-standing usability issue and minimizing visual distraction on the road.
Additionally, iOS 27 enables native audio scrubbing for CarPlay users. Previously restricted on vehicle displays, drivers and passengers can now tap and drag the progress bar to seek specific timestamps within songs or podcasts. To make touch interactions safer while driving, the system includes a larger, more accessible playback slider designed for touchscreens.

At launch, these interactive audio tools will be restricted to Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. However, third-party developers, including popular streaming applications like Spotify and Overcast, are expected to integrate support for these features once updated for iOS 27.
