NASA is advancing its long-term lunar exploration strategy with the upcoming launch of the CAPSTONE 02 mission, which will deploy two maneuverable probes to conduct critical gravitational, flight, and navigational tests in cislunar space. The initiative represents an essential technical step toward establishing a permanent lunar base, expanding commercial space infrastructure, and supporting future deep-space exploration operations under the agency’s Artemis program.

The primary objective of CAPSTONE 02 is to evaluate how complex gravitational forces near the Moon affect spacecraft flying in close formation. Operating in regions influenced simultaneously by the combined gravitational pull of both Earth and the Moon, the twin probes must navigate intricate three-body orbits. Manufactured by Terran Orbital Systems, the two spacecraft will continuously alternate roles as lead and chase vehicles. Throughout the joint flight tests, the probes will evaluate celestial navigation techniques, optical tracking sensors, ground-based telescope data integration, and direct inter-spacecraft communication systems.

According to mission manager Sean Fuller, CAPSTONE 02 represents a vital step in maturing cislunar operational capabilities. The flight control and docking systems being tested closely mimic the navigational architecture required to connect the Orion spacecraft with surface landing modules during future missions. NASA plans to deploy these flight techniques during the Artemis III mission, which aims to execute an orbital rendezvous between Orion, Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lander, and SpaceX’s Starship. The space agency noted that because these specific spaceflight dynamics cannot be fully replicated in terrestrial testing environments, direct orbital verification is mandatory before transporting human crews from cislunar orbit down to the lunar surface.

CAPSTONE 02 builds directly on the original CAPSTONE mission launched in 2022. The inaugural microwave-sized spacecraft completed a four-year operational cycle ending in June 2026, becoming the first satellite to navigate near-rectilinear halo orbits. By advancing those preliminary tests into multi-spacecraft formation flying, CAPSTONE 02 aims to solidify essential lunar navigation capabilities.
