indie_game_showcase2If there’s one thing great about indie games is that sometimes they tend to surprise us with their gameplay. It is because the games are indie games and don’t necessarily face the pressures and expectations that comes from big name developers, publishers, and triple A titles that the developers are free to explore all sorts of avenues.

Journey was a great example of an indie game which many gamers, including the hardcore ones, enjoyed immensely, at least based on reviews we’ve seen so far. To help highlight indie games and to gather them into a specific location, Apple has since launched a new “Indie Game Showcase” section on the iTunes App Store.

According to the description of the newly creation section, “Often made up of just a few dedicated members, independent studios prove that what really matters is the size of your dream. In each Indie Game Showcase, we celebrate a popular game and its creative team, highlighting the developer’s titles along with their favorite games from other studios.”

The section will be updated from time to time and will highlight notable titles from indie developers, as well as the App Store team’s favorite games from other studios. For the first game that Apple will be highlighting, they have chosen Device 6 from developer Simogo.

For those unfamiliar with Device 6, the game isn’t necessarily a FPS game, it’s not really a turn-based game, in fact it feels more like a narrative if anything. The game will combine storytelling with puzzles that has resulted in a truly unique gameplay that one does not come across very often.

In fact the game was even chosen as the runner up for Game of the Year during Apple’s Best of the iTunes Store 2013 awards. So if indie games are your thing, then perhaps the Indie Game Showcase is a section of the App Store that you should check out from time to time.
