Skype is one of the most widely used communication services out there and the folks behind it update the service regularly to ensure that users have the best possible experience. It has already confirmed that work has begun on a new user interface for the desktop client. The most recent announcement related to Skype for desktop isn’t about the release of a new user interface, its about making sure that users take advantage of the latest updates for the client.

In a post on its official blog, it has been confirmed that all older versions of Skype for desktop are going to be retired over the next few months. This includes both Skype for Windows and Skype for Mac. Version 6.13 and below will be retired for the former and 6.14 and below for the latter. This is being done as the Skype team focuses its efforts on “bringing the latest and greatest to the most recent versions of Skype.”

Those who are using older versions of the service need not worry. Its free to update to the latest version of Skype today. The latest version can be obtained from Skype’s website for both Windows and Mac.

Some of the improvements these users will notice right away will include syncing read/unread status of all messages across devices, ability to view complete and consistent chat history across multiple devices as well as the ability to send and receive instant messages even when a contact is offline.
