In the console wars, many people usually think of Sony and Microsoft, although Nintendo would beg to differ. However if we were to talk next-gen, both the Sony PlayStation 4 and the Microsoft Xbox One were released roughly the same time, so it would be fair and more accurate to compare their sales.
That being said, the NPD Group has released their latest figures for May and it looks like for the fifth month in a row, the Sony PlayStation 4 has managed to outsell the Xbox One in the US. We guess this to be expected since the Xbox One was still priced at $499 in May, and gamers were most likely holding out for the cheaper version which was released in June, so perhaps next month we will see the Xbox One’s numbers increase and maybe even catchup to that of Sony’s.
The NPD Group reports that hardware sales were up by 95% from May 2013 and that the growth was largely attributed to both the PS4 and the Xbox One, although they note that Wii U and PS Vita sales grew too. NPD analyst Liam Callahan attributed games like the Mario Kart 8 bundle for helping drive hardware sales for the Wii U, while the Borderlands 2 for the PS Vita helped the console’s sales as well.
In terms of best selling video games, the NPD Group found that Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs managed to top the charts. This was followed by Mario Kart 8 in second place, and Respawn’s Titanfall in 8th place.
