When it comes to instant messenger services and apps out there, it is safe to say that WhatsApp has to be one of the more popular apps/services around at the moment. After all their success and potential to grow even more is probably one of the reasons why Facebook was interested in acquiring them in the first place, right?
That being said, the last time we checked, WhatsApp had managed to hit the 500 million active user mark, but now thanks to a tweet by WhatsApp’s Jan Koum, it seems that the company has since managed to add an extra 100 million active users from then until now, which we have to admit is a pretty impressive feat.
This brings WhatsApp’s total active users to a whopping 600 million, and at the rate they are growing, we can’t say that we will be surprised when the day comes that they will hit the 1 billion mark, although we reckon that could still take a while. Unfortunately while WhatsApp appears to be in the lead, they are facing some stiff competition.
Earlier this year, China’s Tencent’s WeChat app had managed to boast over 300 million active users, although recent reports have suggested that the number is now at 438 million users, with most of them being from China. However apart from WeChat, it seems that other services don’t come particularly close. Tango has about 70 million active users, while Viber can only boast around 100 million.
