apple pay ausAs it stands, Apple Pay is currently only available in the US. This is due to the fact that the credit cards used in Apple Pay must be tied to a US credit card company. This means that despite you owning the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6 Plus, that feature won’t be available in your country, at least for now.

However it seems that Apple Pay can be used overseas, such as in countries like Australia where NFC payment methods are widely available. This was tested out by Beau Giles who is a web developer and blogger based out of Sydney. However as Giles points out, this will only work if your phone’s location is set for America and if you own a credit card that has been issued in the USA.

Granted this means that the number of people who can actually use the feature has been greatly reduced, but for Americans living overseas and who still have their American credit cards active, all you’d need to do is set your phone’s location to the USA and ensure that the payment terminal supports NFC and you should be good to go.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? Unfortunately it has been pointed out that this doesn’t make much financial sense because using your US credit card overseas will incur additional fees such as conversion fee which could make the purchase even more expensive. However if anything this does tell us that there are some countries in which terminals that support Apple Pay already exist, even if it was inadvertently, so it’s a matter of Apple activating the feature.
