ps4 20th

If you are following news related to the gaming industry you might have heard by now that to commemorate the PlayStation’s 20th anniversary, Sony launched a limited edition 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 that has a color scheme inspired by that of the PSOne. Only 12,300 units of this console were produced and sold in North America and Europe. Demand is much more than the supply, which has led to scalping, and this is something that Sony is not too happy about.

When Sony started selling the 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 online all units sold out within a matter of minutes. Soon after that units started appearing on eBay, with some going for as much as $20,000.

The company then sold some through pop-up locations in London, as well as online for gamers in the UK. eBay in the UK is also home to several listings for these limited edition units all going for a few thousand pounds.

Fergal Gara, the head of PlayStation UK, tells Eurogamer that “That’s not what we want to see happen.” While admitting that it is hard to prevent this behavior completely Gara says that “It’s inevitable some proportion of that will happen.”

Sony hasn’t said if it’s going to produce more units to satisfy demand. That really wouldn’t go with the whole limited edition thing that Sony has got going with these units, which is probably why there’s little chance of more units being offered up for sale at retail price.
