VLC is a very popular media player that happens to be a darling of particularly those users who look towards torrents for content downloads. It is a simple, lightweight and powerful media player with support for virtually all formats which is why it is widely used on a variety of platforms. Its now landing on a new platform. VLC player for Android TV has been confirmed, a preview version has been released as well.

Last year Google unveiled a new platform through which it means to take over your living room. Android TV comes after the demise of Google TV. It focuses on providing a much improved user experience with an emphasis on apps and services, as well as gaming.

Lots of major manufacturers have committed to developing Android TV powered devices. At CES Sony announced that its smart TV models will run Android TV. The Nexus Player, a set-top box powered by this platform, is already available for purchase.

The team behind VLC player for Android TV is working on bringing it to the platform. They’ve not released the app on Google Play as yet because its not complete. A preview APK has been released though which can be downloaded by adventurous users and sideloaded.

A release date for the stable version of VLC player for Android TV has not been provided yet.
