These days, more of our TVs are getting “smarter”. However, the problem is that everyone seems to want to use their own proprietary software, which each TV makers has included their own software. This has resulted in a bit of fragmentation where some TV software is better and more feature-rich than others.

However, if you do prefer the Android TV operating system, you’ll be pleased to learn that the upcoming OnePlus TV will be running on Google’s software. In an interview with Gadgets360, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau was quoted as saying, “One more key selling point that I want to highlight is that we are really optimising the Android TV system which I don’t see a lot of brands in Indian market [doing]. Because of our great partnership with Google, not only do we use their Android TV system but we also optimise it very deeply.”

He adds, “I’ve seen some premium or high-end TVs currently available in the market. Some of the TVs might have great quality but in terms of user experience they are not doing very well. And vice versa — I’ve seen some TVs may have great user experience but they are not very high-end or premium. But for us to do a great TV the definition is — great quality and great user experience. So this is what we want to achieve as the first step.”

OnePlus is expected to launch their own smart TV soon, possibly next month. Hopefully, the company’s smart TV will be similar to their smartphones, where they will be priced affordably. That being said, the TV market is very competitive so it remains to be seen if OnePlus has what it takes to make it.
