russian missileDrones can be used for surveillance purposes, but they can also be used in combat where they can launch missiles. So what can one do to counter these drone attacks? Well there are anti-aircraft guns, assuming they can detect said drones, but it seems that over in Russia, the Russian military is said to be developing a new way of dealing with them.

A report from Sputnik News (via Engadget) has revealed that Russia is apparently working on a microwave gun. This gun is said to be able to deal with drones and missiles, allowing the Russian military to knock both drones and missiles out of the sky from as far as six miles away. Not only is this gun capable of doing that, but apparently it is also capable of disrupting electronic radio equipment of low-flying planes.

According to Russia’s United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation, “The new system is equipped with a high-power relativistic generator and reflector antenna, management and control system, and a transmission system which is fixed on the chassis of BUK surface-to-air missile systems. When mounted on a special platform, the ‘microwave gun’ is capable of ensuring perimeter defense at 360 degrees.”

The idea is to deactivate the equipment which turn will help to neutralize precision weaponry. The company is expected to demonstrate the weapon’s capabilities during this week’s Defense Ministry’s Army 2015 expo.
