It was reported yesterday that Apple was in talks with mobile carriers in Europe and the United States to set up its own Mobile Virtual Network Operator or MVNO. This move would have allowed the company to not only provide the smartphone but also provide call, text and data service directly to users. Apple usually doesn’t comment on rumors and report but it has made an exception this time around and confirmed that it’s not working on a phone service.

Yesterday’s report came from Business Insider which claimed that Apple was working on its own wireless mobile service. It was said to be speaking to wireless carriers in the U.S. and Europe with an eye on the long-term prospects of such a move.

Apple has shot down the report though, saying that it has not discussed a MVNO cellular service with carriers and is not planning to launch such a service.

While the report suggested that Apple’s MVNO service might not be launched for at least five years today’s response from the company makes it quite clear that such a service is not in the pipeline because if it was Apple would probably stick with silence.

Can one rule out the possibility? Who knows what Apple will be doing a decade from now but currently it seems the company is okay with not having a wireless service of its own.
