amtrak

One of the things that many people disliked about Apple Maps was that it didn’t provide transit directions like rival Google Maps, which was booted as a native app from iOS to make way for Apple’s homegrown solution. Apple has been working hard though to bring transit directions to its mapping service, and if you’re on iOS 9, you can also see popular Amtrak routes in the Northeastern United States when searching for transit directions in Apple Maps.

These popular Amtrak routes are primarily available in cities where transit directions have now gone live in Apple Maps, the longest available route that’s showing up in the app right now runs from New York to Chicago. Other supported routes include Northeast Regional, Acela Express, Keystone, Lake Shore Limited, Pennsylvanian, and Maple Leaf, many of these routes operate between multiple cities in the Northeastern United States.

For example the Lake Shore Limited runs from New York/Boston to Albany and then on to Chicago. Acela Express runs between New York, New Haven, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC.

Apple Maps users located in the South, West, Midwest and Northwest are out of luck because Amtrak routes for these regions are currently not available in the app, but seeing as how Apple is gradually adding them, it may only be a matter of time before they too can take advantage of this feature.
