In terms of virtual reality headsets, the most compact version we’ve seen to date is probably Google Cardboard, simply because of how simple its design is. Other headsets like the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR are a bit bulky and will need to be connected to another device to work, meaning that as far as portability are concerned, that’s pretty much out of the question.

However if you wanted portable virtual reality, this is where the Figment VR comes in. What is the Figment VR? Basically this is a smartphone case that can also double up as a virtual reality headset. This is thanks to a built in mechanism in the case that at a flick, will pop out a pair of lenses that will let you view virtual reality content on your phone.

In that essence, we guess it’s not a virtual reality headset per se, but more like a virtual reality viewer, but either way it is still a pretty awesome idea. The fact that it can be folded away into a case means that you won’t need to carry anything extra with you when you’re out and about, and anytime and anywhere you can check out virtual reality content.

At worst even if you don’t have any VR content to look at, the Figment VR can also double as a kickstand for your phone, which admittedly would be a waste of a perfectly awesome gadget. However as it stands, the Figment VR will only play nicely with iPhones, but its creators expect to extend support to Android devices soon.
