Fiat Chrysler has issued a recall for more than half a million SUVs for fire risks, the problems are related to a low pressure rose and wiring of the vanity mirror. The recall has been issued at a time when the company’s safety efforts are being scrutinized by regulators in the United States. It was only earlier this month that Fiat Chrysler agreed to pay $70 million in fines for failing to report vehicle crash injuries and deaths since 2003.
Fiat Chrysler has issued the recall for 477,000 2011-2011 model Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs following an investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this year to find out if cars serviced in a previous related recall remained at a risk for fires.
The company said that overheating issues were only reported in 0.02 percent of the vehicles that were serviced in the previous recall, adding that if the recall procedure was not followed precisely, it may leave vehicles “susceptible to a short-circuit, creating a potential fire hazard.” Dealers are required to secure wiring in the SUVs’ overhead lining with a new adhesive.
Fiat Chrysler has also issued a recall for 93,000 2015 model Jeep Compass and Patriot SUVs to inspect and if the need arises replace a clamp which secures low pressure from a return hose. It says that clamps in some vehicles produced during a five-month period in 2015 may be out of position which could result in a rapid loss of power steering fluid, that’s also a fire hazard.
It says that so far there have been no reports of any crashes or injuries related to the issues highlighted in these 570,000 vehicles that have now been recalled.
