At the launch of its new iPhone last year, Apple introduced a cool new feature called Live Photos. Think of them as photos on steroids, as Live Photos capture motion and audio 1.5 seconds before a picture is taken and 1.5 seconds after allowing users to capture much more in a single image without having to make a video. It’s already possible to view them on the Photos app in Mac but now support will be added to the Messages app on Mac soon.

Earlier this week Apple released a new beta of OS X El Capitan to developers and it has been discovered that the beta does feature support for Live Photos in Messages on Mac. They will enable users to view and share Live Photos through Messages with iOS devices.

Live Photos aren’t widely supported by online services as yet but they’re most certainly opening up to them. Tumblr has added support and so has the world’s largest social network, Facebook, it allows users to view and upload Live Photos from its iOS app.

The next update for El Capitan is going to add support for Live Photos to the Messages app on Mac, so when users receive a photo in the app, they will see an icon in the top right hand corner which will mention that it’s a Live Photo.

There is just one caveat though. Dragging the Live Photo to the desktop to save it will not preserve the format instead it will be saved as a still image, copying and pasting won’t work too. If users want to save a Live Photo they will have to use the native share buttons for that purpose.
