solar-powered-jacketNow here is a wearable that harnesses the power of the sun – a solar-powered jacket, that is. ThermalTech is the company behind this Indiegogo project, where it has been deemed to be the “world’s first solar-powered smart jackets” which is capable of increasing “in-clothing temperature” by 18°F in a matter of two minutes. How is this possible? Well, the “paper-thin” stainless steel mesh fabric that is threaded within will do the bit of absorbing the sun’s UV rays, and in turn, be able to transform the absorbed UV rays into heat.

Carlos Cortes, CEO of ThermalTech, shared, “We believe that by introducing this solar-absorbing fabric into the apparel marketplace, the next generation of outerwear will provide the consumer with even more of an optimal temperature & fit. This will allow everyone from the snowboarder to the fashionista to be warmer in colder climates.”

There will be a trio of ThermalTech jacket versions, and they are the Street (rated for 32° to 50°F/0 to 10°C), Explorer (30° to 55°F/-1° to 10°C) and Extreme (same temperature range as the Explorer, all the while being lightweight in nature, breathable, and waterproof. It is always nice to see tech going green, and being incorporated into everyday objects such as jackets without adding on the bulk.
