The majority of criminal mugshots taken around the world are usually of the 2D variety. Sure, some mugshots get suspects to pose in different angles, such as facing forward, facing the left, and facing the right. However it seems that over in Tokyo, Japan, police are taking things to the next level.
According to a report from Asahi Shimbun, Tokyo’s police force will soon start taking 3D mugshots of suspects that are being held in custody. What’s the point, you ask? The idea is that by creating 3D mugshots, police will be able to identify suspects quickly and easily, thus increasing their arrest rate.
Speaking to the paper, a senior police officer said, “As we can identify the suspects more quickly and accurately, our arrest rate is expected to become greater.” With the use of a 3D mugshot, police will be able to rotate and adjust the angle of the picture to match that of CCTV footage, which they can then match and hopefully identify suspects.
The Tokyo police force is expected to roll out the technology and equip all 102 police stations in the capital with 3D cameras. We imagine that regular 2D mugshots will remain, but for now the police will have an additional tool at their disposal.
