tidalThere have been many artists who have initially voiced out against music streaming services, namely because the amount of money they make for streams is very low. There is also the issue of royalties and this is a problem that music streaming service Tidal is currently facing as they have been recently hit with a $5 million lawsuit over alleged unpaid royalties.

The lawsuit comes from Yesh Music Publishing and John Emanuele of duo The American Dollar, with claims that Tidal had streamed 118 songs by American Dollar without permission and did not pay the band. The lawsuit also claims that Tidal had miscalculated the number of streams by as much as tens of millions.

Unsurprisingly Tidal does not think that they are in the wrong and has since released a statement which reads, “TIDAL is up to date on all royalties for the rights to the music stated in Yesh Music LLC and John Emanuele’s claim, and they are misinformed as to who, if anyone, owes royalty payments to them. The entire catalogue in question streamed fewer than 13,000 times on TIDAL and its predecessor over the past year.”

The platform also notes that any music associated with Yesh Music and Emanuele have since been removed from the platform.
