amc hong kongA couple of days ago, AMC made a rather controversial statement in which the company mulled the idea of allowing texting in cinemas. While some cinemas do ban it outright, there are others that don’t, presumably relying on people to act appropriately during such situations, but AMC wanted to explicitly allow it.

This was according to AMC’s CEO Adam Aron who was interviewed by Variety in which he said, “When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow. You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That’s not how they live their life.”

Undoubtedly a huge fuss was kicked up over this and thankfully the company saw reason and have since backtracked on their plans. In a statement that they posted on Twitter, the company wrote, “NO TEXTING AT AMC. Won’t happen. You spoke. We listened. Quickly, that idea has been sent to the cutting room floor.”

In the full statement it also reads, “With your advice in hand, there will be NO TEXTING ALLOWED in any of the auditoriums at AMC Theatres. Not today, not tomorrow and not in the foreseeable future.” Phew! But what did you guys think? Were you on board with the idea of texting being allowed in cinemas?
