It has been quite some time since BlackBerry released a new handset. Recent reports suggest that its first Android-powered smartphone – the BlackBerry Priv – didn’t perform as well as it would have hoped. There’s speculation about the future of its handset business once again particularly following the end of the BlackBerry Classic’s production but the company isn’t bowing out of the handset market just yet. BlackBerry CEO John Chen has said that the company is going to talk about new devices next week.
Some BlackBerry fans might have been holding on to hope that the company is going to talk about upcoming devices at the BlackBerry Security Summit that’s currently underway in New York but that’s not the case.
Chen addressed the elephant in the room right off the bat. “People always ask me about handsets, but we do a lot more than handsets.” “We are becoming a strong professional services provider,” he said, adding that this was the last time that he would talk about handsets during the Summit.
He also said that the time to discuss the company’s new devices is next week and that will be done by BlackBerry’s chief operating officer Ralph Pini, who is also the general manager for devices at the Canadian company. BlackBerry is expected to come out with new Android-powered devices, it’s not believed to have a new BB10 OS handset in the pipeline right now.
