Mi VR Play_01A leaked photo yesterday seemed to hint at Xiaomi’s plans for their own VR headset, which according to the rumors would be launched today. For those wondering about the legitimacy of the photo, wonder no more because Xiaomi has officially announced the Xiaomi Mi VR Play virtual reality headset.

Unlike other VR headsets from Samsung or LG, Xiaomi has opted for a rather interesting construction. Instead of the smartphone clipping inside the headset or secured using plastic, Xiaomi has decided to turn to the use of a zipper mechanism to unzip the pouch where the phone will be slotted into. It will also be made from Lycra.

The company claims that the reason for choosing this material is to prevent discomfort especially if the wearer plans on wearing it for an extended period of time. The headset will also be able to play nicely with devices whose display ranges from 4.7-inches to 5.7-inches, meaning that pretty much any Android phone will fit into it.

There are also plans to release it in a variety of different colors and design, all of which will allow the wearer to express his/her individuality. No word on pricing of the Mi VR Play yet, but there has been speculation that it could cost as low as $10. Availability is also unknown at this point in time, but Xiaomi is currently accepting beta testers with a release date to be shared later on.
