playstation_vrWhen new products are launched, it’s easy to understand why sometimes at the start they tend to be sold at a loss. This is because the cost of a product is more than just how much it costs to manufacture, but the time and money spent researching it, developing it, testing it, creating prototypes, marketing it, and so on.

However it seems that for the Sony PlayStation VR, despite the device being new, the company is already boasting that they are selling it at a profit. This is according to Shawn Layden, Sony’s chairman of Worldwide Studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment who spoke to Polygon in an interview where he was quoted as saying, “We’re making money on the VR console.”

As Polygon points out, this isn’t the first time that a new Sony product has proven to be profitable right out of the gate. The PS4 when it was first launched was also revealed to have not sold for a loss, although we guess given that Sony’s experience with the previous three generations of consoles probably helped them avoid the wastage of resources.

That being said, the PlayStation VR is already available for purchase for gamers who are interested. It retails for $399 which actually makes it the cheapest out of the dedicated VR headsets out there today, although the only downside is that it requires gamers to own a PS4 console.
