Depending on how old you are, you might have used rotary phones back in the day where landlines were pretty much the only way you could get in touch with someone via the phone. The concept clearly never made it to cellphones because by the time cellphones came about, phones with buttons were already a thing.

However in a recent video on YouTube, Mr. Volt has put together his own prototype of a rotary cellphone. According to the video’s description, “A friend gave me a rotary phone mechanism years ago, and I finally got around to turning it into a working cell phone! It can call, text, play FM radio, and store one whole phone number.”

Now as you can see in the video above, the phone looks pretty troublesome to use since dialing out meant getting some kind of pointed object to put into the dial to spin it. This process had to be repeated for every number, so you can only imagine how slow it will take to dial out to someone, versus using a voice assistant which is a common feature in smartphones today.

However there is something very retro and steampunk-ish about Mr. Volt’s invention that we really like. Of course there are no plans to actually sell it or mass produce it, so do check out the video above which is probably the closest we’ll get to actually owning or using it.
