Cortana is limited to PCs, mobile devices, and Microsoft’s gaming console so it can’t really be considered as an Amazon Echo rival. The Echo devices are basically smart speakers with Amazon’s digital personal assistant Alexa baked in. Alexa is able to personal a wide variety of tasks at the user’s commands. Cortana does the same on the aforementioned devices but with the newly announced “Project Evo,” Microsoft is going to give Amazon Echo and other similar devices a run for their money.

Microsoft is working with Intel on Project Evo which is going to bring Cortana to household devices. The devices will support far-field speech communications so users can tell Cortana what to do from across the room, that’s quite similar to how Amazon Echo is used.

Project Evo devices will also feature the latest security capabilities to offer protection against hacking and malware. Analytics from Intel will be coupled with “world-class security intelligence,” insights from Microsoft’s Intelligent Security Graph and advanced in Windows Hello biometric authentication.

A recent report suggested that Microsoft is working on something internally referred to as HomeHub, the report claimed that it’s going to crush devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home by leveraging the power of Cortana.

Microsoft hasn’t revealed much about Project Evo beyond what it has already talked about. The company says that it’s going to provide more information about Project Evo in the months to come.
