We know how long it took Apple to decide to make the jump from 3.5-inches to 4-inches for the iPhone’s display, although thankfully the jump from 4-inches to 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches didn’t take quite as long. So given that it’s been 3 generations of iPhones, could a new display size be in the works?

We’ve heard rumors dating back to 2016 about a possible 5.8-inch iPhone, a rumor that has persisted into 2017. Now according to a report from Nikkei (via 9to5Mac), they too have “confirmed” that 2017 will bring us a 5.8-inch iPhone. This is particularly interesting as previously the publication had refuted those rumors, but now this report brings it in line with claims by notable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who also indicated that a 5.8-inch is in the works.

For those hearing about these rumors for the first time, apparently what Apple is planning to do this year is to launch three iPhone models. The “standard” iPhone models will continue to exist in their 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch options with their LCD displays, but the third model is allegedly the one with the 5.8-inch screen with an OLED display, a change that Apple has been rumored to make for the past few years.

Safe to say that this should probably be taken with a huge grain of salt, but given that many are starting to decry the iPhone as being boring, we suppose this could be a much-needed change.
