It has been a while since Amazon came out with new Echo hardware and according to a recent report, that might change in the coming months. Amazon has reportedly started beta testing the new Echo that will be powered by its artificial intelligence-based smart assistant Alexa. The company is expected to add some major functionality to Echo which will set it apart from the competition.

Previous reports have suggested that the new Amazon Echo is going to have support for voice calls. It will enable users to make voice calls to their friends and family by simply issuing voice commands to the assistant.

It will be really interesting if Amazon brings voice call functionality to the Echo but questions remain on how it’s going to make that work. Google is also expected to add voice calling functionality to Google Home so from the looks of it, smart speakers such as these are going to get a lot better this year.

The latest report by Recode mentions that Amazon is working to add intercom functionality between Alexa-enabled devices. This will enable owners of Echo and other Alexa-powered devices to communicate with each other in the house.

Amazon has not yet commented on its plans for a new Echo device but the report mentions that an announcement could be made in the coming months.
