Electric cars don’t always come cheap, but because they are supposedly better for the environment, the idea is that buy not paying so much for gas anymore you could end up saving money in the long run, whilst doing your part for planet Earth. The good news is that if you live in the state of New York, prepare yourselves for some rebates.

In a report from AP (via Electrek), it seems that the state of New York has finally decided to offer new electric car buyers a rebate of up to $2,000. As it stands there are federal tax credits that are applicable to new electric car buyers, although individual states have made it more enticing by offering state-level discounts as well, but until recently the state of New York has not offered that to its residents.

According to state Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, “We want to make electric vehicles a mainstream option. They are becoming more affordable and we need to encourage them.” It is unclear as to how the $2,000 will be broken down, but combining this with federal incentives, it has been estimated that new electric car buyers will be able to save themselves as much as $10,000, which is quite a lot of money.

So if you live in New York and have been thinking of making the jump into an electric car like the Chevy Bolt or Tesla Model 3, then now seems like a pretty good time to consider one.
