Display technology has come a long way over the past few years. Samsung showed us with the Galaxy S8 this year so it can take things up a notch and if a new report is to be believed, it’s not done blowing our minds just yet. A new report out of South Korea claims that Samsung is developing a display with four curved sides. That’s not all, even LG is said to be working on a similar display panel.

A display that has curves on all four sides would mean that even the top and bottom of the display would be curved. This would allow for a truly bezel-free display with an impressive screen to body ratio of almost 98 percent.

Such a display panel will enable the manufacturer to utilize more screen real estate without having to increase the actual size of the handset. We can see this with the Galaxy S8 as well. The Infinity Display has allowed Samsung to maximize screen real estate without having to increase the size of the handset significantly.

However, it’s going to take some time before Samsung and LG are both able to use such a display in consumer devices. Apparently, current lamination techniques present a challenge as there will be a spot in each corner where touch functionality will not work.

This challenge will need to be addressed first before we can have smartphones with displays that curve on all four sides.
