Disney Reassures That ‘Deadpool’ Will Remain R-Rated

Following the rumors that Disney was close to buying Fox, the rumors have since been confirmed as Disney has recently announced the deal which is said to be worth $52 billion. What this means is that pending regulatory approval, Disney’s acquisition of Fox will also see some Marvel franchises return to the company (Disney owns Marvel).

This includes titles like X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Speaking of Deadpool, it was one of the first R-rated superhero movies around and despite it receiving the adult rating, it proved to be a huge success, but will Disney’s acquisition of Fox somehow interfere with the future of the series? Thankfully no, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In a call with the media following Disney’s massive announcement, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger stated that there are no plans to change Deadpool to make it more family-friendly. According to Iger, “It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”

That being said, it’s probably still a bit too early to tell what Disney has planned with their acquisition and for franchises like X-Men and the Fantastic Four, but given what a massive flop the previous Fantastic Four movie was, we wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel already had a script prepared and tucked away somewhere for such an eventuality. In the meantime Deadpool 2 is currently set for a release on the 1st of June, 2018.
