The future of one of Netflix’s most popular original shows became unclear this year when its lead was accused of sexual assault. Netflix suspended production on the upcoming sixth season before ultimately dropped Kevin Spacey from the cast. It also announced that the sixth season would mark the end of this series. While many were uncertain if the final season would even be made, Netflix has now announced that production has begun on the sixth and final season sans Kevin Spacey.
Netflix had confirmed this much last month. Its content chief Ted Sarandos had promised that Netflix would resume House of Cards production in early 2018.
As Spacey is no longer involved with the show Robin Wright, who played his character’s wife on the show, will now be the new lead. The transition won’t be jarring given the events of the last season and the fact that Wright’s character has been given her own agenda in the past couple of seasons and is now well suited to be the main character in the story.
While previous seasons of House of Cards have all had 13 episodes, the sixth and final season will only have eight episodes. Netflix is yet to confirm when the final season of House of Cards will be released.
