There was some speculation recently about the material that OnePlus would use for the back of its upcoming flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 6. Some had suggested that perhaps the company would opt for a ceramic back but that’s not going to be the case. The company has officially confirmed that the OnePlus 6 is going to have a glass back.

The confirmation came in a forum post from OnePlus CEO Pete Lau in which he walks us through the design history of the company. He says that OnePlus works with the aim of keeping product design honest so that the design speaks for itself.

Those who had been holding out hope for a ceramic back will have to wait longer now because OnePlus has officially confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will have a glass back much like some of the other flagship smartphones available on the market today. This shows that the company is going to embrace two design trends with the OnePlus 6, display notches and glass backs.

Lau says that OnePlus tested more than 70 glass prototypes before settling on the one it’s going to use for the final product. He also mentions that this glass back is going to have five layers of water-resistant Nanotech Coating which he claims is a first in the industry.

The glass back should, at least in theory, enable the OnePlus 6 to support wireless charging as well which no other OnePlus smartphone has offered so far but that’s not something that Lau has confirmed today. He’s yet to confirm the official launch date for the handset as well.
