In-display fingerprint sensors were touted to be the next big thing in biometrics, but to date we’ve only really seen a couple of such handsets, such as Vivo who was the first to the market with a smartphone with an in-display sensor. However it seems that Xiaomi could be next, according to a leaked video that is making its rounds.

In the video (via GSMArena), it shows a handset that is allegedly that of the Xiaomi Mi 8 with what appears to be an in-display fingerprint sensor. Now it’s hard to tell if the leaked video is legit, but given that Vivo has already gotten the ball rolling we suppose it was only a matter of time before we started seeing more handsets with the feature.

Now some of you might be thinking, wait, didn’t the Mi 6 launch last year? What happened to the Mi 7? Considering that Xiaomi is a Chinese company and that the Chinese belief in that the number “8” is supposed to be lucky, and that it is the company’s 8th anniversary, this is apparently why Xiaomi skipped the Mi 7 in favor of the Mi 8.

That being said, Xiaomi is said to be officially announcing the phone on the 23rd of May which is next week, so perhaps we’ll have all the official details then. Until we do perhaps it’s best to take it with a grain of salt for now.
