Apple is believed to be working on a couple of new AirPods products such as a high-end on-ear model. A recent report claimed that the second-generation in-ear AirPods will feature noise cancelation and water resistance. There’s word on the street now that the next-generation charging case for AirPods will allow users to wirelessly charge their iPhone as well.

The Nikkei Asian Review reports that iPhone users will be able to wirelessly charge their devices using the charging case for AirPods. Apple is expected to release this new charging case for AirPods later this year but the report cautions that the schedule is subject to change.

Apparently, the case will be used for charging iPhones in the same way that the AirPower wireless charging mat would be used. It’s pertinent to mention here that AirPower has still not been released and it likely won’t arrive until September, almost a full year after it was announced.

One should bear in mind that the existing AirPods case has a 398mAh battery while the iPhone X has a 2,716mAh battery. The case simply doesn’t have enough capacity to charge an iPhone X completely.

Perhaps Apple will enable this just to allow users to get some extra charge when they’re in an emergency but just how this would work remains to be seen. For starters, the case would require additional circuitry to be fit inside a small case and then it would be difficult to balance an iPhone on the case as well. So this is likely just wishful thinking from someone in the rumor mill.
