Apple has officially announced the AirPods 5, introducing active noise cancellation to an open-ear form factor, expanded integration with Apple Intelligence, and improved acoustic hardware.
Audio Upgrades and Noise Cancellation
The newly launched wireless earbuds feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) designed for an open-ear fit, delivering up to 50% greater noise reduction efficiency compared to previous generation open models. Apple has integrated a multi-port acoustic architecture paired with next-generation Adaptive EQ and support for Personalized Spatial Audio, aimed at refining dynamic frequency response and spatial immersion across varied environments. Transparency Mode has also received processing adjustments for more natural pass-through audio.
AI Integration and Smart Controls
Central to the upgrade is on-device AI connectivity through Siri AI and Apple Intelligence. The earbuds support real-time translation across multiple languages, allowing users to conduct conversations seamlessly through audio prompts. In addition to stem-based swipe gestures for volume adjustment, users can employ hands-free head gestures—such as nodding or shaking their head—to respond to Siri prompts, answer incoming calls, or manage notifications.
Battery Life and Build
Battery endurance reaches up to 5 hours of continuous playback with ANC activated, extending to 22 total hours when paired with the charging case. For durability, the earbuds carry improved resistance against dust, sweat, and water. In line with corporate environmental goals, the hardware is built with 40% recycled materials, packaged in 100% fiber-based boxing.

Apple is offering the earbuds in two distinct hardware configurations:
- AirPods 5 (Standard Charging Case): Available for $129.
- AirPods 5 (Wireless Charging Case): Available for $149, adding wireless charging functionality alongside stem-based volume slider controls.
Preorders open immediately, with general retail availability and shipping scheduled to commence on September 18 across more than 65 countries.
