Camera maker RED announced their plans a while ago to launch a smartphone of their own. The phone has since been delayed to October later this year, but for those who are curious about the phone and want to get an idea of what to expect in terms of size, display, design, and so on, you’re in luck.

This is because YouTuber Marques Brownlee opted in to be part of the company’s early beta testing program, in which RED will send out units to 300 customers who pre-ordered the handset in the form of the “Houdini Edition”, and these users will then provide feedback about the phone as they go to help the company improve it ahead of its final release.

Now right off the bat as noted by Brownlee, the phone is huge even by his standards. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but given that phones these days are seeing an emphasis on edge-to-edge displays, the bezels on the Hydrogen One do seem out of place. It also features the use of last year’s Snapdragon 835 chipset which isn’t necessarily a slouch.

However given that this year’s flagships are using the Snapdragon 845 and with next year’s phones sporting the Snapdragon 855, we’re sure this will affect the decision of some would-be customers. In any case if you have a few minutes to spare and want a good look at the Hydrogen One, check out the video above.
