Google today announced that those who purchased movies from Google Play Movies will receive an upgrade to the 4K version of those titles for free when they become available. It has confirmed that when 4K titles are available from participating Hollywood studios, users’ past movie purchases will automatically be upgraded so that they can stream in 4K for no additional charge. A 4K TV will obviously be required to take full advantage of this.

It doesn’t matter if you originally purchased the movie in SD or HD. The upgrade will be complimentary for all of the movies that the customer owns and for which the studio has since released a 4K version. Users will be informed when any of their titles have been upgraded once they launch the app.

The company has also confirmed that it’s no longer going to be charging more for 4K movies. The titles will now cost the same as their HD version on Google Play Movies. That’s a good move but one that’s a bit late as Apple has been doing this since last year.

The Google Play Movies & TV app has now been updated for Samsung, LG, and Vizio TVs. The app now has a more modern look in order to provide an improved user experience.
