Costa, one of the largest coffee chains in the United Kingdom, has launched a reusable coffee cup that’s capable of paying for your morning fix as well. It’s called the “Clever Cup” since it does more than just hold your beverage. Contactless payments are built into the cup so it can be used to pay for coffee at a Costa location on the go.

This solution is also going to tackle the UK’s massive waste problem as less than 1 percent of disposable coffee cups are currently recycled. Its reusable cup has a detachable contactless chip that’s powered by Barclaycard’s mobile payment technology.

The balance on this £15 can be topped up using Barclay’s bPay app. It can then be used to pay for a variety of beverages at Costa’s stores. However, the payment technology isn’t just limited to the coffee joint. You can actually make payments on the go with this cup anywhere contactless payments are accepted.

Sure, it requires carrying a big cup around with you all day and that’s not going to be easy for some, but if you want to do your bit for the world and cut down on the waste contributed by disposable coffee cups, then this is the perfect solution.
