The Essential Phone was launched without a headphone jack, much like quite a number of smartphones these days. However the company later announced that they would be launching an audio adapter which is basically an external accessory that brings back the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The accessory was spotted at the FCC last month and now for those who are interested, the device is available for purchase. Unfortunately it does not come cheap. Essential has priced the accessory at a whopping $149 which is pretty crazy for a headphone jack, and for those prices, you might be better off buying a pair of wireless headphones.

However this is more than just a 3.5mm adapter. According to Essential, this is also a DAC which features an audiophile grade amp. This means that if you’re someone who truly cares about the sound from their headphones, then this could be an accessory worth considering, which also explains its hefty price tag.

We’re not sure how many people would actually need such an accessory, but like we said, if you fancy yourself an audiophile and would love to get the best audio possible out of your phone, then maybe the $149 price tag can be justified.
