Black Panther was a massive hit and many felt that the movie should receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. It would be a watershed moment if it did because no superhero movie has received a nomination in history. Black Panther has now become the first superhero movie in history to receive an Oscars Best Picture nomination.

The Best Picture nominations have long been reserved for typically dramatic films but there have been arguments in support of superhero films being considered for the prestigious award as well. The debate began some ten years ago when Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight didn’t receive a nomination even though many felt it was worthy of one.

Following the criticism, the academy did change some things. It increased the number of films in the Best Picture category from five to 10. However, it wasn’t until now that a superhero movie was given the nod.

Whether Black Panther wins the Oscar or not is another matter. It’s up against some really good movies including The Favourite, Green Book, and Bohemian Rhapsody, to name a few. Nevertheless, just the fact that it has been nominated goes to show that this is a movie worthy of all accolades.
