Yesterday Apple launched the Smart Battery Case for their 2018 iPhones. There was a model for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR. Given that the iPhone XS and iPhone X share similar dimensions, it did not come as a surprise to learn that the case for the iPhone XS also fits the iPhone X.

However it seems that despite it being a good fit, you might run into some issues. Some users have since reported that when using the iPhone XS case with the iPhone X, they are getting “this accessory is not supported by this device” error messages. iMore’s Rene Ritchie had also experienced the issue, but he discovered that updating his iPhone to the latest build of iOS should get rid of that problem.

It should be noted that the message will pop up from time to time, but you can dismiss it and it appears that the phone will still continue to charge just fine. It has also been pointed out that while the case fits, the microphone and speakers at the bottom of the phone are designed differently and will not be aligned properly with the case.

This can have an impact in terms of audio quality and the ability to pick up on your voice, so it’s something to think about if you are considering using this case with your iPhone X. Alternatively there are other third-party cases that could be worth checking out if you’d rather not deal with these issues.
