The Ghostbusters franchise was most recently rebooted back in 2016 with an all female-led cast but the studio is switching things up once again. According to reports, Sony has brought in Jason Reitman, son of the original 1984 Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, to direct a sequel to the film that will be set in the original Ghostbusters world.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the sequel is planned for a release in summer 2020. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day,” Reitman said.

What’s not clear at this point if any of the original lead cast members will be returning back, which include Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Dan Aykroyd. Harold Ramis, the fourth star, passed away in 2014. The director is believed to be looking to cast two male and two female teenagers for the sequel.

As it stands, it seems like the sequel will ignore what happened with Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot with an all female-led cast. While the movie was generally well received, many fans of the original didn’t really like it. The intense criticism eventually led to plans for a sequel being shelved.
