Taika Waititi, who directed Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, won’t be in the director’s chair for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. He has himself confirmed that the project, which has been on hold since its director James Gunn was fired, will not see him behind the camera. He referred to it as “James’ film.”

His statement comes amid rumors that he was a leading candidate to replace Gunn on the project. Disney and Marvel Studios fired James Gunn back in July last year after some offensive tweets resurfaced. The movie’s cast did try to get Marvel and Disney to reconsider but they didn’t budge.

Waititi commented on the matter at the Television Critics Association today, saying that he wouldn’t feel right taking over a movie that had evidently been Gunn’s from start to finish. “Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying, ‘Hey, I’m your new dad,’” Waititi said.

While it’s clear that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 isn’t dead yet, fans will have to wait for a considerable time before the movie hits the big screen as it has already been delayed from the previously announced schedule. Gunn, in the meantime, is reportedly going to write and direct Suicide Squad 2.
