Marvel fans who have been concerned about the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise may have something to look forward to. Amid all of the turbulence on the production front, it appears that the next installment in the series is not dead in the water. There may be hope yet for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was put on hold after the director and screenwriter James Gunn was fired from Disney. Gunn was fired after offensive tweets from many years ago resurfaced. The franchise’s cast threw its weight behind Gunn but Disney did not budge.

That meant the film wouldn’t make its previously scheduled 2020 release and was thus pushed to 2021. It continues to remain on Disney’s calendar which is a good sign. Actor Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in the series, has previously said that the project will move forward even without Gunn, adding that “there’s a script in existence.”

Gunn had written the script for this film originally and it’s as yet unclear if the script Gillan mentions is the same or a new one. Even Chris Pratt, who plays Starlord, has said that there’s going to be a third movie without offering little details on how it will pan out. So there’s some good news among all of the uncertainty, but it brings with it more uncertainty.
