Apple’s pro photo editing tool Aperture has been quite popular over the years but there’s going to be a significant change now for users. Apple has cautioned that Aperture will no longer work in versions of macOS that it releases after Mojave. This includes the one due this year and thereafter.
Users who wish to retain access to their Aperture libraries after that will either have to migrate them to Photos or Adobe Lightroom Classic. The fact that Apple is going to do this after Mojave shouldn’t really surprise anyone.
The app hasn’t been updated for almost five years and no downloads have been offered for almost four years now. So the writing has always been on the wall for Aperture but still, the transition has to be made for those who are still using the app.
The support page on Apple’s website presents several options for those who are looking to make this transition. This includes migrating a library to the Photos app or to Adobe Lightroom Classic. When the latter is done, library organization, metadata, and image adjustments are preserved with a few exceptions, such as RAW files being migrated but Aperture’s non-destructive adjustment layer on top being left behind.
