A couple of years ago, Apple landed themselves in trouble when it was discovered that older iPhones were being throttled via software updates. According to Apple, they justified this by saying that due to degrading battery health, without the throttling of the iPhone’s speed, it can lead to the phone shutting down at random.

However, customers weren’t too thrilled about it as they were not notified and were not given a choice. The good news is that according to a report from CNBC, it seems that Apple has agreed to clarify future updates and will notify customers if the update has the potential to slow down the iPhone. This agreement was made to the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority who had previously investigated the company over slowed down processor speeds.

This new notification means that customers can choose to not update their iPhones (even though it’s always a good idea to keep your phone up to date), or at least be informed so that when they do update and experience a slowdown, they know that it’s because of the update. It was previously reported that due to the hardware improvements made to the newer iPhones, that any throttling or slowdowns might be less obvious than before.

Apple has also since introduced ways for iPhone users to check their battery health and also an option for these users to disable throttling if they wish.
