Back in 2017, Verizon acquired Yahoo which in turn also meant that they acquired some of the other companies under Yahoo’s umbrella, such as microblogging platform Tumblr. However, we had heard back in May this year that Verizon could be looking to sell off Tumblr, and sure enough they have.

Verizon has since unloaded Tumblr where it will now be owned by Automattic, who for those unfamiliar is the owner behind WordPress. In a post on Tumblr, “Automattic shares our vision to build passionate communities around shared interests and to democratize publishing so that anyone with a story can tell it, especially when they come from under-heard voices and marginalized communities.”

For those who are wondering what kind of changes will be taking place now that Tumblr has a new owner, perhaps we shouldn’t get our hopes up just yet. As some of you might recall, following Verizon’s acquisition, it was announced that Tumblr would be banning adult content on its platform.

It was not a popular move which saw the platform lose about 20% of its users following the decision. However, it seems that Automattic will be keeping that ban in place, so it looks like any hope of seeing Tumblr returning to its former “glory” have been dashed.
