You know those police drama shows where they zoom in on a photo or video, and magically it becomes sharper and clearer instead of more pixelated? It looks like that technology is slowly becoming a reality, and more recently it has been demonstrated in a film that was shot back in 1896 that was upscaled to 4K using AI.

The original film, given how long ago it was shot, showed excessive amounts of grain, soft focus, and a lack of color. However, thanks to the use of AI, it allowed the original to be upscaled in a smarter way that looks a lot clearer and sharper compared to before, and sound was even added to it to make it seem more realistic.

However, it should be noted that what the AI creates is based on what it’s been taught from other image sets. This means that if we were to closely examine all the pixels, some of it might be wrong and some even completely made up in order to fill in those blanks. However, on the whole, it should still result in something that’s very believable to the untrained eye.

In any case, if you have a few minutes to spare, you can check out both the upscaled version of the video and the original in the videos above.
