According to a report from last week, it was suggested that Apple is ramping up on the number of suppliers for mini LED display panels. We have been hearing rumors that Apple could be switching to the technology, and now a report from DigiTimes claims that come 2021, the first mini LED product we can expect from Apple would be a 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Apple refreshed the 12.9-inch iPad Pro this year, but apart from the inclusion of the LiDAR sensor, it was a modest refresh at best, although this should not detract from the fact that it is still an incredibly powerful tablet. However, if the report is to be believed, 2021’s iPad Pro could be a more substantial refresh.

For those unfamiliar, mini LEDs can be viewed as a hybrid technology of sorts that combines certain elements of LCDs and OLEDs. LCDs are typically viewed as not being particularly energy efficient as it requires backlighting, whereas OLEDs feature individual pixels that can be turned on or off.

With mini LEDs, it takes the technology behind OLED but does away with some of its flaws. Many have been wondering if Apple could introduce OLED screens to the iPad, but it seems that perhaps the company could skip that and use mini LEDs instead. The report goes on to claim that Apple is also expected to introduce a similar display to a high-end MacBook which is expected to arrive in the second half of 2021.
