If you happen to use Microsoft Edge as your browser of choice, you’ll be pleased to learn that Microsoft has recently issued an update to the browser. This update will introduce a new security feature where if it detects that you have a password that has been compromised, it will warn you about it.
Given the numerous larger scale data breaches that we’ve seen in the past, there is a good chance that you might have an account or two whose login credentials could have been compromised. There are websites to check to see if your passwords might have been leaked, but since it wouldn’t be practical for you to check it all the time, having Edge’s Password Monitor would be a useful inclusion.
Microsoft is definitely not the first company to use such a feature where we’ve seen other browsers, like Chrome and Firefox, introduce similar security measures. However, one of the main differences is that Microsoft will use what is called homomorphic encryption. This means that no one, not even anyone at Microsoft, will be able to see your passwords during the checking process, where Edge will compare your saved passwords to that of a list containing breached passwords.
It’s a pretty cool concept and adds that peace of mind knowing that your data is always secure. If you’re an Edge user, then this might be a nifty feature to keep an eye out for.
